I used AI to write a cover letter for an application at Google.
A look at our new AI Cover Letter Writer.
Cover letters have no place in today's hiring process. Yet, they've stubbornly inserted themselves in every job seeker's application to-do list.
Writing is tough stuff. I dread writing this article... what if I make a mistake for all of Linkedin to see? Even with low stakes...
Now imagine the crisis when your dream job depends on an ability to compose a 100% mistake-free, engaging, and tailored cover letter?
Some people are better at developing and then writing out cohesive paragraphs of information that relate to the job description and how their skills and experiences tie to it. Others can't shake writer's block when it comes to writing about themselves.
Luckily a cover letter doesn't have to be complicated. Common advice says a cover letter should contain five essential paragraphs: an opening greeting; an opening paragraph; one-to-two body paragraphs; and a closing paragraph. A cover letter should also be tailored to the specifics of the job description and your resume.
I did fail two semesters of calculus, but I've also helped job seekers land their dream job at even the most competitive spaces. So, I'm feeling confident about this cover letter formula:
Resume + Job Description + Writing Ability = Cover Letter
I'm Jacob and also the founder at Rezi - a pretty neat resume builder - you can paste a job description into Rezi, and our AI will tell you exactly which keywords and skills should be in your resume.
By design, Rezi understands your resume and the targeted job description.
Using GPT3 to write cover letters
GPT-3 is a new language model from OpenAI that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of the tech, we've used GPT-3 to generate unique cover letters based on the best cover letters we've written for Rezi customers.
As I'd explain this to my grandma - we told GPT-3: "Here, this cover letter is really good, given these inputs, do it again"
Rezi's AI Cover Letter Writer uses the following inputs to generate a cover letter:
Company Name
Position Title (sourced from pasted job description)
Highlighted Experience (sourced from resume)
Highlighted Education (sourced from resume)
Highlighted Skills (sourced from pasted job description)
